Martin Luther King Jr.

                         


Martin Luther King was an American Baptist minister, activist, humanitarian and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He was born on January 15th 1929 in Atlanta. He is the best known for his role in the advancement of civil right using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. In 1963 he organised a civil rights march in Washington DC. Here he made his famous speech "I have a dream" in which he called for an end to racism in the United States. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 to honour his courageous work. He was assassinated in 1968 when he was in the town of Memphis, Tennessee. His death created a stronger desire to continue with the civil rights movement. People remember him every year in the United States: Martin Luther King Jr. Dayt is celebrated on the third Monday in January.
